Jack J. Kleid, M.D. is a well-known cardiologist who has been practicing in San Diego for the last 29 years. He is originally from New York City and currently resides in La Jolla, California. He has written numerous scientific articles and ten scientific books. He was one of the pioneers in the field of echocardiography, an important diagnostic testing procedure for heart problems. Dr. Kleid was named one of America’s Top Physicians - presented by Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Dr. Kleid is a Q.M.E. (qualified medical examiner) for the state of California workers compensation cases in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases.


Dr. Kleid began his education at the University of Michigan where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree. He then graduated from New York Medical College earning his MD degree. Subsequently, he trained at Montefiore Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden where he received his specialty training in cardiology. He is an associate clinical professor in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine at the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego. Dr. Kleid is also interested in sports medicine and was formerly the team physician for the San Diego Clippers NBA basketball franchise.

Dr. Kleid is frequently called upon by various organizations to lecture. For the past 15 to 20 years, Dr. Kleid has developed a significant interest in alternative medicine in addition to practicing traditional medicine. He uses alternative medicine in his practice and in his lectures as a form of complementary and integrative medicine.

Dr. Kleid was chief of cardiology at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals, New York Medical Collage for a period of four years. He was the founder of the New York Echocardiography Society and was the consulting physician for Walt Frazier Enterprises. In 1978, Dr. Kleid and his family moved to La Jolla, California and established a cardiology practice. He also became chief of medicine and chief of cardiology at Clairemont Community Hospital. He is currently on staff at Sharp Memorial Hospital, Scripps Hospital, and the University Hospital in La Jolla, California. Dr. Kleid has had appointments on the faculties of the following medical schools: UCSF School of Medicine, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Colombia University School of Medicine, and University of California San Diego School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and in cardiovascular diseases. He also has a professional certificate in business administration from UCSD.

Dr. Kleid has served as president of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Medical Clinic of San Diego and was a pioneer in cardiac rehabilitation in the United States. He was a member of the board of directors of the American Heart Association San Diego Chapter for 10 years. He has also been secretary treasurer of the medical staff at Mission Bay Hospital. He was the chairman of the board and president of the Beach Cities Clairemont IPA, Inc., which included a group of 150 specialists in San Diego. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association. In addition, he is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He has been a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Angiology and the New York Cardiology Society. Also, he is a fellow of the American College of physicians, a fellow of the American Heart Association and is member of the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. Dr. Kleid is also an active member of the American Heart Association Council on Nutrition and Physical Activity and Metabolism. He is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.

Dr. Kleid has been a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the California Medical Association, and the County of San Diego Medical Society. He was also a member of the education committee for the San Diego County Heart Association. In addition, he has been a member on the committee on clinical cardiology for the American College of Chest Physicians and has been a reviewer for the American Journal of Cardiology, the journal “Chest,” Annals of Internal Medicine, and McGraw Hill Publishing company. He has also been a member of the American Geriatric Society and the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. Dr. Kleid has presented numerous scientific abstracts and has published numerous scientific papers and ten scientific text books.

Dr. Kleid has three children and five young grandchildren. He lives in La Jolla with his wife. He enjoys exercising on the beach, swimming, hiking and he’s a passionate basketball fan.
